Manteo area FacilitiesNote: telephone area code is 252Fort Raleigh National Historic Site - Manteo NCThe first English settlement in the Western Hemisphere. Sir Walter Raleigh and his colonists landed in 1585, stayed for a year and returned to England. A year later another group, sponsored by Raleigh but led by John White, reoccupied the settlement. After unloading the ship, White sailed back to England not to return until three years later. The place was deserted; no trace of anyone. Hence, it has been dubbed the 'Lost Colony'. There has been some reconstruction but the site is surrounded more with guesses, conjectures and theories than facts. They do put on an outdoor production every summer called, "The Lost Colony". It is both interesting and well done. Follow US-64 east to Manteo. The Fort is just before you enter the town. While you are there you might visit the Elizabethan Gardens, and then enjoy a drive along the Outer Banks.
