Haywood County - the Magic
Sharing The Magic
When Haywood County was established
in 1809, it was so big that it contained land that is now part of four other counties.
It's still big... 546 scenic square miles. With so many forests, woodlands, mountain
streams and wilderness areas to explore, outdoor enthusiasts will try to squeeze a
lifetime of entertainment into a single visit... but the best way to discover the Smokies
is one season at a time.
Spring comes early to the mountains as dogwood blossoms sparkle against emerald green
hemlocks, and endless ribbons of mountain trails unfold for everyone to explore. Hikers
and horseback riders have been traveling these natural pathways for centuries and now
mountain bikers are sharing the magic found along our mountain trails.
Summertime means sunny days with cool breezes and even cooler nights. Millions of
wildflowers add a splash of color to lush fairways as the mountains' most popular sport
reaches its peak. Golf in Haywood County dates back to the 1920's and 'mountain golf' has
been receiving national acclaim ever since. Our six courses offer a unique brand of golf
amidst a variety of scenic distractions.
And, what would a summer vacation in the mountains be without a rafting trip down a
whitewater river?
Even if you're not the outdoors type, there is nothing more enticing than watching the
brilliant fall color as it flows from the top to the bottom of the Great Smokies. The
outdoors is enjoyed year round because our winters are so mild. You can search for
sapphires in the valley and schuss down the snow-covered slopes at Cataloochee Ski Area in
the same day. You see, because of its altitude, Cataloochee gets mountain snowfalls that
often never reach the valley floor. Even if it doesn't snow, Cataloochee has
state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment to keep a great base on the mountainside. Nine
groomed slopes and natural trails challenge beginners and experts alike.
Golfing, biking, hiking, skiing, riding, rafting, fishing, mining, sightseeing... there's
so much to do outdoors and so little time.
Welcome to Haywood County - You'll
just have to come see us more often!
