Cheraw is one of South Carolina's oldest and most picturesque inland towns. Named for the Cheraw Indians, Cheraw began as a small trading post at the head of navigation on the Great Pee Dee River. By the time of the War of Independence, Cheraw was the site of the parish church and was officially laid out with a Town Green and wide streets.
You've seen the grace of the old Southern towns in the movies, - well here is one in real life. From the Market Hall (c.1837), the Cheraw Lyceum (c.1825) and many other early to mid 19th century buildings to the 18th Century St. David's Episcopal Church (c.1770), built under the monarchy of George III, Cheraw is history come alive. This is now the nucleus of a 213 acre National Register Historic District rich in gardens and the architectural legacy of 250 years. But there is much more to Cheraw than history.
Come linger awhile and wander through tree-shaded streets, taste some home cooking and shop for antiques. Spend the night in the hometown of Jazz King Dizzy Gillespie and see where he worked and played.
On the edge of the Carolina Sandhills, the area has 96,000 acres of public land ideal for hunting, fishing, hiking and riding as well as excellent golf courses - come and see for yourself!

Created as a hydroelectric impoundment of the Catawba River, this is a 14,000 acre magnet for watersports - especially fishing. The lake is south of Great Falls and north of Camden.
Also on the Catawba River is Lansford Canal State Park (between Rock Hill and Lancaster).
