To coincide with the summer beach season, the Clean Beaches Council
(CBC) recently released its annual list of beaches that have been officially certified as ‘clean and healthy.’ The annual list of Blue Wave Beaches shines a spotlight on our nation’s cleanest beaches. Carolina Beach, located along Southeastern North Carolina’s Cape Fear Coast, is among the nation’s 49 beaches that applied for and met criteria for designation as a CBC Blue Wave Beach in 2003.
Now in its fifth year, the Clean Beaches Council runs the most comprehensive, national environmental beach certification program in the country. The Blue Wave Campaign is a voluntary program open to rural and resort beaches and helps beach communities provide cleaner, healthier environments for families and tourists who vacation there.

Certified Blue Wave beaches are cleaner because they must adhere to environmental standards that require rigorous litter control. Beaches that apply and meet these criteria receive the Blue Wave flag, the symbol of the program, which is prominently displayed beachside.
“Visitors seek out clean, healthy environments for their vacations. Recognition as a Blue Wave Beach should go a long way toward attracting families and other visitors to Carolina Beach,” states Judith
Grizzel, Pres./CEO of the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority.
The Clean Beaches Council works with state and local environmental and health authorities to verify application data. Blue Wave certification is valid for one year. The Clean Beaches Council conducts certifications throughout the country this summer.
